Dating Around: Controversial Reasons Why He is NOT Calling You Back! (For Women Only)

dating confidential - he's not calling back

As a professional coach, I have the absolute privilege to work with clients in all sorts of dating situations. From my experience, I’ve gathered feedback from both male and female clients who are actively dating around. This post will give you a glimpse into the sometimes controversial reasons why he is not returning calls.

Reason #1: Jumping in bed with him too soon

jumping in bed too soonLet’s start with the big one.

S-E-X

Yes, sex is a healthy and natural part of an adult intimate relationship. No complaints there! However, in this modern age, many women are trying to live out the lives of their favorite reality show icons and hop in the bed with a man too soon. Now, I’m no prude and think sexual liberation is a wonderful thing. Here’s the rub — women should realize that many men are not as hip to the times emotionally as they would like you to believe.

Check out this scenario: Yes, a woman meets a hot guy at a bar, had a few drinks, and then had a great mutually enjoyable night of sex. She thinks everything is going fine. He was the perfect gentleman when they parted ways the next morning. But it’s been five days and he has not called her back…WTF?!

Well, from several of my male clients who’ve been in this exact scenario, the story goes like this. They really like the woman and enjoyed the sex, but now they’re a little unsure if they want to move forward. Having sex so soon after meeting them kind of put the woman off their list of being someone potentially serious that they would date. They put the woman in one of three categories:

  • one night stand,
  • booty call, or at most
  • casual sex partner.

Now, don’t get me wrong, this is by no means what all men do and how all men think! I’m just relaying what I’ve seen happen many times.

Lesson learned: Wait to have sex until a more established communication and trusting relationship has been established.  A great book to read that speaks to a modern generation of women navigating the murky waters of dating is Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Expanded Edition: What Men Really Think About Love, Relationships, Intimacy, and Commitment. I don’t agree with everything Steve says but I think there are many nuggets of truth in his insights.

Reason #2: Giving away too much too soon

Piggybacking off of the last reason, this is also about giving away too much too soon. Ok, so a woman meets a guy at the grocery store and the two of them have been exchanging texts for about a week. It’s not a good idea for her to one day decide to dump her entire life story on him via text!  Clients who have experienced this often see the woman as needy, potentially emotionally unstable, and basically a hot mess to date.

Lesson learned: A person should wait to reveal more about themselves to a potential partner until more trust and comfort has been established.

Reason #3: Allowing him to only text

man text only

This blog post is for grown ups and if any person is past those tender high school years, a man should know how to communicate past texting. If he cannot write and speak in full sentences, then the bigger question may be “Is he someone I really want to date?”  Grown men talk on the phone.

Set standards in dating and don't let him just text! Remember, grown men talk on the phone. Share on X

One piece of feedback that I’ve heard repeatedly with some of my male clients is that they don’t really take women seriously who only allow them to text. Yes, you heard me right. They state that they don’t take women seriously who allow them to only just text! Upon digging deeper into this insight, the bottom line is that they feel the woman has low self-esteem. In successful dating, it’s about a person setting a standard and holding another person to them!

A book that I recommend with totally outlandish (but insightful) lessons for women is WHY MEN MARRY BITCHES: EXPANDED NEW EDITION – A Guide for Women Who Are Too Nice

Lesson Learned: If a person wants to progress towards a serious relationship, regular phone conversations should be apart of the way they are communicating with their sweetie.

Reason #4: Personality comes off as too one-sided

dominant personality

  • Too angry
  • Too bitter
  • Too needy
  • Too clingy
  • Too strong
  • Too controlling
  • Too insecure
  • Too unavailable

Does any of this sound familiar? Well if it does, then a person needs to take a step back from dating for a while and do some self-work. A person should figure out why this description is how they are being perceived.  I even encourage talking to exes for some valuable insights!

For more insights about dating, read my blog post Are You A Hot Mess At Dating?!

Lesson Learned: Any person who wants to have a successful dating life needs to first know who they are.  Doing some serious deep reflection, especially with the help of a relationship coach, can prove to be invaluable in recognizing some overdeveloped personality traits.

Reason #5: He doesn’t have a chance to talk

no chance to talk

A woman meets a guy at the gym and they end up going on a date.  He picks a fabulous place, arrives on time, and is a perfect gentleman throughout the evening. Things go south quickly (at least in his mind) when the woman sits down and basically talk about herself the entire night! She may think his crooked smile and nods mean that he is totally into her but nothing could be further from the truth!

Honey, he is being polite.  I’ve had clients relay this situation often and they are frustrated and irritated as a result.

Lesson Learned:  If a person needs to talk a lot about their backstory or is unaware of the habit they have to dominate conversations then they need to explore options such as:

  • the services of a professional counselor if there are really emotionally scarring things from their past that they always seem to bring up.
  • hire a professional coach to help them address the habit of dominating conversations and the meaning behind that behavior.

Reason #6: He doesn’t have a chance to process

guy processing in nature

Ok, so a woman goes out with a guy she recently meant and the first date went really well! The food, entertainment, and conversation were great. Now it’s the day after and she’s on edge about him asking her out on another date. If there is resonance with this, take a deep breath, put down the phone and do not text him! This is not about playing games, this is about being mature and giving him space to process. From what I hear from clients, this is sadly the place where things go south.

Lesson Learned: After meeting and engaging with a new potential intimate partner, it may take a few days to process.  Men and women process differently and each person needs a different amount of time to process such new encounters (especially if they’re positive).  Take the time to do some self-reflection.  Why does anxiety occur when the thought of him not calling comes up?  What does consistent communication look like? The answers to these questions provide great insight.

Reason #7: Emotionally charged topics are discussed on the first dateemotionally charged

This bit of advice is probably not new, but politics and religion are a no-discuss zone on 99.9% of first dates. Even if two people vote the same political party, have the same religious views, and feel the same way about the issues of the day, they are re inevitably going to be some nuance around these hot-button items that they will not agree upon.  I’ve had clients who basically tell me that they got in a heated debate on a first date and they were both on the same side of an issue.  Needless to say, that left a very bad taste in everyone’s mouth.

Politics and religion are a no-discuss zone on 99.9% of first dates. It takes mutual respect to have an effective debate with another person. Share on X

Lesson Learned: Leave emotionally charged topics of discussion at the door.  I’ve learned that it takes mutual respect to have an effective debate with another person.  On a first date, respect and familiarity are minimal because two people don’t know one another yet.  This is not the time or place to have that discussion.

Conclusion:

Leave all of your quirks, phobias, and craziness at home!  Dating should be a positive experience, even if you don’t end up going on a second date.  Be open and flexible (within your personal boundaries of course!) and go out there and date up a storm!

Secret Reasons Why Professional Coaches Are NOT Calling You Back

professional coaching pinAs a professional coach, the success of my business depends on retaining current clients as well as getting new prospective clients.  Same as any service business.  For assistance in getting new potential client perspectives, I’m registered on several websites that help service professionals do just that (i.e. Thumbtack, Bark, etc.).  However, there are a few things that will make me hit “PASS” very quickly.  Since people go to these service sites with the best intentions and expectations, I wanted to give prospective clients some insight as to why they are being overlooked.

The request is too vague

profession cooaching vague details

Adding a simple sentence like “I need to get my life together” is something coaches loathe.  It sends the message that the prospective client is someone who is unclear about where they want to start.  This comes across as jumbled and scattered and no professional coach wants to deal with that!

Any person making a request through these service websites should complete the additional details section.  They should be meaningful details about themselves.  1-3 sentences are sufficient.

The information has red flags

professional coaching red flag

Just like when a person reads an online dating profile and there are red flags that go off about a person, with a coaching request, similar mental warnings occur.  Words and expressions such as:

  • “depression”,
  • “depressed”,
  • “mental health”,
  • “suicidal thoughts”, and
  • “have no hope” are a no-go.

These are red flags for professional coaches and many reputable coaches will not contact a prospective client with such words in their details.  What these words are telling the coach up front is that the prospect has deeper emotional and mental issues that need to be handled by a qualified and certified therapist or counselor.  As I explain on my home page, coaches are not mental health professionals.

Only open to face-to-face professional coaching

This one really bugs me, especially for prospective clients who have never experienced professional coaching.  First, those who want to employ the services of a professional coach need to understand there are two fundamental reasons many professional coaches do not do face-to-face coaching:

#1: Safety

As I stated earlier, professional coaches are not mental health professionals.  That being said, based strictly upon our training as coaches we do not have the tools to deal with the erratic and potentially dangerous behavior of a prospective client who may not want to hear what we have to say.

One of the first things I learned in my ICF-approved professional coach training was “when in doubt, refer them out”.

Here’s a quick scenario: A professional coach responds to a coaching request on one of the services I mentioned earlier.  The prospect wants to meet face-to-face so they agree on a great public location where there is some privacy.  Like a public park.  So they meet, exchange pleasantries, and sit on a bench to chat.  It becomes apparent to the professional coach very quickly that this prospect:

  • is better suited for therapy,
  • is not be a good fit for coaching, and
  • has some serious anger and impulse control issues.

Now, this coach is in a tight spot.  For the exact reasons they have identified, they don’t feel comfortable (or safe) telling the prospect that they will not take them on as a client.

So my question is, why would a professional coach put themselves in this situation?!

The answer is simple.  Most of us wouldn’t.  I do not do face-to-face coaching to avoid the very scenario described above.  When a prospect books a session with me, it’s either for a phone or Zoom/Skype session.  This makes it more comfortable and convenient for us both and certainly a safer set of circumstances for myself.

Please note this is just how I see things.  Every professional coach is different and needs to do what works best for their business.

#2: Cost

professional coaching costThe cost of traveling to see a prospective client is something that many people don’t consider when they state that they only want to meet with a professional coach “face-to-face”.  This to me translates as a prospect stating that they expect me to take on unnecessary costs (i.e. travel, gas, and commute time) with no guarantee that a paid session will be booked.

This is a bit of a red flag and gives me the impression that a prospect is not serious about wanting professional coaching services.

Details are too exacting with “dos” and “don’ts”

prospective client demanding

I have seen this scenario way too many times to count and it always makes me chuckle.  A prospective client will put in a request for a professional coach through a service site and in their details, there is a long list of “dos” and “don’ts” for the professional coach and “wills” and “won’ts” for themselves.  I smile and instantly click pass on such prospects.

The reason is simple.  If a prospective client has already decided what they will and won’t do and what a professional coach needs to do or not do for them, then this is not a person who is serious about wanting to make positive changes in their life.  Now, to be clear, I am not talking about anything to do with:

  • professional behavior,
  • ethical standards, or
  • basic respect.

What I am referring to is a prospective client who basically wants someone to agree with their current behavior and not effectively challenge it.  The impression a professional coach gets is that this prospective client has control and accountability issues (which is also a red flag).

I hope this was insightful for readers and makes it a little more clear as to why those seeking professional coaching, personal trainer, or other personal services may not be getting any responses.

3 Steps to Getting Unstuck

3 steps to getting unstuck

We’ve all been there.  You may be there right now.  You know that place in life where things aren’t terrible (or maybe they are), but nonetheless, you’re juggling/managing everything?

You feel frustrated

You feel angry

You feel stuck

Below are the three basic steps that I recommend to any client who comes to me with that situation.  Here’s how to get unstuck fast!

1. Create Space

getting unstuck - mindfulness and meditation

You may not be able to physically, financially, or environmentally create space where you’re at, but you can create space mentally.  Mindfulness and meditation are where you should start.  Now before you get scared off by what you think these terms mean, know in this day and age mindfulness and meditation practices are very approachable. With videos on YouTube and apps like Headspace, you can learn to meditate and be more mindful in as little as 3 minutes a day!

Mindfulness and meditation are skills. Like any new skills, they will take time to learn and master. Share on X

Mindfulness and meditation are skills.  Like any new skills, they will take time to learn and master.  Just try it out for 7 days for 3 to 10 minutes a day.  You’ll notice more internal calmness and clarity…especially when it comes to mind chatter.  The thought of getting unstuck will become more real to you.  As you become more consistent at mindfulness and meditation practices, you’ll notice things around you begin to change.  The fact is those external things around you likely didn’t change.  You’re internal perspective and perception around those things is what changed.

Here are some books I recommend on this topic:

2. Acknowledge & Release

acknowledge and release - getting unstuck

  • Buried in debt?
  • Have a crappy job?
  • In a relationship that has grown stagnant and stale?

Whatever your current situation is acknowledge it.  Now to be clear, acknowledging something in your present environment does not mean accepting it.  Acknowledgment means you are no longer resisting the situation in the conscious mind.

  • Yes, you are in debt!
  • Yes, you have a crappy job!
  • Yes, you are in a relationship that doesn’t seem to have a future!

Ok, now let all of that go.

Remember where you’re currently at does not determine your future.  It just happens to be where you’re at in the present moment.

Remember where you're currently at does not determine your future. It just happens to be where you're at in the present moment. Share on X

I recommend to my clients to only take this step after they have been practicing mindfulness and meditation for a while.  This acknowledgment and release of your current situation, in an objective way, allows you to mentally and energetically disarm the negative energy around the situation.  Disarming that negative energy, and its impact on you, gives you your power back!  This is the power that you need to create change in the next step.

3. Get Clear

get clear - getting unstuck

Lack of progress is often a reflection of a lack of clarity. Share on X

Lack of progress is often a reflection of a lack of clarity.  Where do you want to go?  I have seen many clients start a million things but never make a clear plan of what they plan to do.  This approach usually ends in frustration, anger, and feeling stuck all over again!

Stop doing that.

Don’t start a million things.

Getting unstuck means that you are going to get really clear about what you want.  Do you want to lose weight?  Get clear about the type of healthy lifestyle you want to lead.  Want to start a successful business? Get clear about the type of business you want to start.  Get clear on how you define success.  Want a fulfilling relationship?  Get clear on what you do and don’t want in a future partner.  If getting clear on your own seems overwhelming, book a Discovery Session with me today.  Working with a professional coach will give you the extra support, accountability, and partnership needed to get unstuck.

These steps may seem simple and they are.  However simple doesn’t mean easy.  Take a few minutes and jot down some things you can do for each step.  How can you create space?  What do you need to acknowledge and release?  What can you get clear about?

Here are some books that l have found useful around getting unstuck:

At the end of the day, you are the first person you must look to for getting unstuck.

7 Signs That Intimate Relationships Aren’t Your Cup Of Tea

7 (1)

Many people say they want it, but do they really?

I’m talking about…the big “M” word...Marriage

Between all of the princess movies and fairy tales heard countless times growing up, to the sappy romcoms that fill many people’s watch lists on streaming television, many women (and some men) have it imprinted on their psyche from a young age that marriage is the answer.  To be fair, marriage is the ultimate intimate relationship.  However, it’s not the end all to be all.

Many of my current clients grew up secretly (and some not so secretly) wanting that wonderful prince to sweep them off of their feet. That’s the main reason they decide to hire a relationship coach. With that being said there are many situations I’ve come across with clients that have allowed me to pinpoint the 7 things that I hear most often that are a signal they probably aren’t ready for marriage and their communication in relationships needs serious work.

1. Communication in relationships is a challenge

communication in intimate relationships

  • Does shutting down happen often when frustrated?
  • Are silence, avoidance and the infamous “cold shoulder” go-to behaviors for handling conflict?
  • Is spazzing out a part of how anger is handled?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions, then chances are a person may not be ready for marriage.  The importance of communication in relationships cannot be underestimated.   If a client finds themselves struggling with proper and effective communication in relationships, then they need to take the steps to work on it.

No one else can make them a better communicator and it won’t just “happen”.  The decision to hire a relationship coach will help a client become aware of any relationship sabotaging patterns that they have.

During their relationship coaching sessions, a client will also work with the coach to come up with effective strategies to address those patterns (Hint: have no fear of being the uncoachable client). Remember, communication is key in any relationship but especially in the context of an intimate relationship where one person is sharing their space, body, food, finances, and ultimately future with another person.

Some books of interest include:

2. Compromise in intimate relationships seems like defeat

First of all, if a client looks at intimate relationships like a chess match, then they are bound to lose.  Compromise in relationships is an important part of any adult relationship period, not just in marriage.

It always baffles me how clients are so open to healthy compromise in work, family, and friendships, but as soon as we start discussing compromise in the context of intimate relationships, they shut down!

Appropriate compromise in relationships is healthy and necessary. Share on X

I usually have to talk clients off the ledge a bit with this one.  I explain that they are an adult with their own thoughts, feelings, and outlooks.  In their intimate relationship, they are trying to come to a harmonious conclusion with another adult who has their own thoughts, feelings, and outlooks.  Inevitably they’re not going to always agree.

Having hesitation and doubts when it comes to compromise usually comes from past hurts.  Often those hurts need to be addressed during coaching sessions so a client can let all of that go.  Marriage can truly be an uphill battle for those who struggle or refuse to compromise.

If this resonates on any level, journal it.  Next, meditate on what the perfect relationship looks like.  Let those feelings out about why compromising in relationships is hard (or scary, etc.).  What does the interaction look like in a perfect relationship?

3. Have a belief that the person who makes the most money makes the rules

breadwinner in intimate relationshipsWe have all heard the saying “he (she) who makes the gold, makes the rules”.

This does apply to many areas of life but one area that it should not apply to is in a marriage.  Healthy intimate relationships need to be built on mutual love, respect, and trust.  In marriages where there is only one partner working or one partner is clearly the breadwinner, this should not be used as a reason for treating the other partner as a lesser contributor to the relationship.  Communication in relationships about money, support, and contribution are necessary for success.  I definitely recommend that you hire a relationship coach if you have issues around money, intimacy, and communication in relationships.

4. Long term commitment is a new frontier

Not to say that every person has had lots of long-term relationships before marriage, but if a client is over 30 and has not been in a long-term committed intimate relationship, we definitely dig deeper.  Learning the importance and the how of communication in relationships will keep you from repeatedly stumbling and failing.

There may be deep-rooted resistance, fear or anxiety around intimate relationships that have not been addressed.  Deciding to hire a relationship coach will give a person the time and safe space to explore this further.

5. Lingering intimacy issues from past intimate relationships

lingering issues intimate relationships

(This is similar to 4. above but not exactly.)

We all have issues. That’s just part of what makes us human.  However, for the purposes of this blog post, I’m talking about those deep fear of intimacy issues that stem from past negative experiences in intimate relationships.   These issues prevent a person from fully connecting (mentally, physically, or emotionally) with another.  If there is resonance with this subject, then a person’s issues could run the gambit of manageable enough for a professional coach to assist to severe enough for the assistance of a therapist or counselor to be required.

♦For more insights about dating, also read: Are You A Hot Mess At Dating?!

6. Severe indecision about having children

Now, this is not an absolute dealbreaker, but if a person has serious indecision or opposition with their partner about kids…then marriage may not be for them.  The reason is simple.  Kids take up a huge chunk of time, money, and emotion.  If a person is strictly on the opposing side from their partner on the subject, then having (or not having) kids can cause a serious rift in the relationship.  When I coach on this topic, I make sure that the client reaches clarity around their decision.

7. The desire for marriage is wrapped up in what others are doing or expect

intimate relationships others expectations

Marriage is a serious commitment. So if a person is on edge to get married because of other people’s expectation or experience, that’s a definite red flag.  Similar to understanding thoughts and feelings around children, I work with clients so they can gain clarity around why they want to get married.  If it comes out during a session that it’s because of what someone else wants or what they see other people doing, we stop and do some deep reflection. Questions I ask include:

  • What’s the end goal?
  • What’s driving the desire to be married?
  • How will that commitment look once it’s entered into?

Here are some books that I think can help give any singleton great perspective:

Conclusion:

Marriage is the ultimate commitment but communication in relationships of every kind is important.  You need to understand that any serious intimate relationship takes the right:

  • mindset
  • attitude
  • willingness to do the hard work

on the part of all participants.  SO…be honest with yourself.  Determine if now is the right time for you to be in an intimate relationship.  If the answer is no, fix your s&*t and take the steps you need to take to get in the right place to be in such a relationship.  Remember, you don’t have to do this work alone!  Hire a relationship coach and the two of you can effectively partner to create some very dynamic changes to assist in your communication in relationships.
